If you are interested in deriving the equations I suggest using the book by
Ramo and Whinnery entitled Waves and Fields in Modern Radio and later
editions. It has equations (not original with them) for the penetration of
plane waves into low index media that would ordinarily produce total
internal reflection. By properly assigning complex index of refraction to
your absorbing substance, this approach is adequate for complete classical
description of FTIT.
