Default Fatty acids: analysis techniques?

GC/MS based on EPA method 8270 (Semi-volatiles) should work fine. You
would, of course, need to verify the ID's and do proper validation,
but, on the face of it the method should handle what your looking for.
There are HPLC methods as well, but I prefer GC/MS since the
technology is so pervasive.

Method can be found at

Good Luck.

It depends on what you mean by "based on." Method 8270 would almost
certainly detect the fatty acids as tentatively identified compounds
based on MS library matching; it depends on having spectra in the
library, which can vary to some degree. However, the quantities will
be qualified as estimated, because 8270 does not incluse fatty acids
in the calibration standards. One could modify the calibration
standards, but then one is into method development, which the original
poster is presumably looking to avoid.

One source that I have not seen anyone mention yet is the Official
Methods and Recommended Practices of the AOCS, 5th edition, American
Oil Chemists Society), e.g., those for derivitization as the methyl
ester (AOCS Ce 2-66) folowed by determination by gas chromatography
(AOCS Ce 1-62). They have a web site at
[Only registered users see links. ] that allows one to
search their methods to firnd the definition and scope. They also
deliver the full methods electronically for a fee.

George
