Extract the acids from the sludge using an organic solvent such as methanol,
add phenyltrimethyl ammonium hydroxide (this derivatises the acids to the
methyl ester), inject onto a GC column (PEG such as HP-InnoWax or DB-wax),
inlet temp = 280 oC, FID = 280 oC) ramp temp from 50 oC to 230 oC and hey
presto. The beauty of this method is that the esterification occurs in the
GC inlet port so there is no lengthy work up as for other derivatisations.
You will need to tweek the oven temperature profile to get the best
separation of all the components.
You may need to run some pure acids through first to establish exact
retention times (RT) and to calibrate peak areas.
