Default Newbie: How to determine if a culture is contaminated?

Just started microbiology, is there a standard method for determining if an agar culture is contaminated?

Lots of methods. You can distinguish differences by physical characteristics (Gram stain, uniform colonies), biochemical characteristics (there are a series of different media to inoculate) and antibiotic sensitivity.

Look at a micro lab book like this one ---> http://itech.pjc.edu/fduncan/mcb1000/labmanual.pdf Page 67 is an exercise for determining unknown organisms.
