Has anyone ever had problems with FBS and mold? We have been having issues with our cultures developing mold...I thought it was the incubator not having been cleaned out. We have not had mold contamination for a week and a half now, after cleaning the incubators thoroughly, but last week I noticed a partial 50ml tube of FBS had large debris in it, so I cultured it carefully in a Petri dish and today there is a mold bloom in it. However, my cultures that I used the FBS in when I first thawed it are still clean. I did not use the open tube of FBS and just made fresh media with a new tube. Now that tube has large bits of debris floating in it, so I am in turn thawing a different tube.
Strangely, my coworker hasn't had the same contamination since the first week of the month, and we are using FBS aliquots from the same bottles.

@ LabAsstBeaker It sounds like your your tubes have been contaminated. I had the same problem last year and endend up throwing out the tubes and opening a new box?

@LabAsstBeaker- I agree with Josephinhd, it sounds like your tubes are contaminated.

To answer the original question of the thread - FBS and FCS are the same however some people use the different name.

Hi,

To Nepenthe

You mentioned in this post that you had AML12 cell slow growing problem. After switching serum, the cells were growing fine. I am currently growing AML12 cells but they grow so slow. I wonder which serum did you switch to and what were the culture media used?

Thank you very much for your help.

I work with BT474 cell line and I would like to try an animal-free replacement for FBS.

What exactly FBS consists of? What antibodies? Are those bovine antibodies? What besides antibodies?
