S phase is characterised by DNA doubling, so any DNA stain can be used
as long as you can quantify it. This includes the fluorescent nuclear
dyes like propidium iodide or Hoechst and the non-fluorescent Feulgen
staining. Quantitation by fluorescence is easy (FACS, image processing
microscopy), Feulgen can be quantified by a microscope-linked
photometer, specialised equipment that is probably rare nowadays. The
