the problem in our lab is as following:
As you know, in the last years a lot of bacterial taxons are being replaced by new ones and maybe even more will change in future.
Until now we used the taxonomy of our semi-automated equipment, like Vitek (BioMerieux). The taxonomic classification of bacteria, based on phenotypic properties of the isolates, is implemented in the results generated by these apparatus.
Recently we introduced an equipment (MalDiTof) whose diagnostic workflow is based on proteomics. Because we sometimes still have to use Vitek, we should be able to compare the results. Also we have to teach our customers, sending us clinical specimens.
Our problem is that there is no nummeric classification and the designation of bacterial isolates often can be very different. We are looking for a synonym-database, preferably open source, which would us allow to compare or translate different designations of the same bacterial species. Using the actualized terminology also would necissitate such a dictionary to make literatur searches etc.
is somewhere such an electronic (!) database avaliable? How do you handle this problem?
I appreciate every suggestion or comment!
