Default ORF Finder

Hello I am new here. I am wondering if any of you guys use ORF Finder? from NCBI?

Just general knowledge here, why do 6 frames show up? what is the purpose of the 6 frames?

Thanks

If you read DNA in one direction there are three possible "reading frames" you can have. For example, the following sequence

ATGCCTTAA

Can be read (as codons):
ATG CCT TAA
TGC CTT
GCC TTA

The ORF finder also looks at the possibility your sequence is backwards (i.e. your sequence is of the complementary, not coding, strand), giving you three additional reading frames.
