(please specify) Survey Questions 1. Do you understand the term ‘cloning’?
Cloning is a term used to describe the processes involved in creating duplicates of a biological material. There have been many controversies involving the possibility of human cloning since the creation of Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal, in 1996. 2. What is your view on human cloning?
Scientists claim that human reproductive cloning could provide benefits, as it would allow parents who are both infertile to have children with at least some of their DNA in their offspring. And while the practice of human therapeutic cloning could provide genetically identical tissues and organs for transplantation and also improve the treatment for serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease, the children cloned for therapeutic purposes are eventually disposed of once they have served their purpose. 3. Does this change your view on human cloning?
No 4. Human cloning is prohibited in Australia. However, as of December 2006, a bill legalising therapeutic cloning has been passed and it is now legalised in some parts of Australia. Do you agree or disagree with the government for legalising therapeutic cloning?
Disagree 5. However, when considering the medical benefits of therapeutic cloning, would you be supportive or unsupportive of scientific advancement in this field?
Unsupportive 6. If preventing the birth of children with genetic disorders and disabilities were made possible through the process of cloning, would you be supportive or unsupportive of the scientific advancement in this field?
Unsupportive 7. Do you agree or disagree with the fact that it could skew the process of natural selection and create an unbalance in nature?
Disagree 8. If further research was made to ensure that the cloning procedure would prove to be safe. Would you consider using this technology?
No 9. Do you think it is morally right for someone else to carry the responsibility of deciding whether this technology should be used on another human being?
No 10. This technology is capable of enhancing humans, for example delaying ageing, expanding muscles or improving memory. Do you think that this technology will be abused to create designer babies if it were to become available?
No 11. Would you consider a clone as another human being?
No 12. Would you behave differently towards a person if you know they were a clone?
No 13. Some people accuse scientists for trying to ‘play as God’ would you agree or disagree with them?
14. Cloning can be used to make a copy of people who are already deceased. Do you think you would you ever consider using this technology do to so?
No 15. Are you for or against genetic modification to treat disease?
Against 16. Are you for or against genetic modification for human enhancement?
Against 17. Do you think cloning would become more acceptable in the future?
No 18. If cloning was to become allowed do you think it would have a positive or negative impact on society?
Negative 19. Do you think cloning will become something of importance in the future in regards to medical benefits?
No 20. Do you think cloning is more of a scientific, technological, social, moral, ethical or economic issue?
