I have seen a respectable number of bioinformatics job ads over the last few years and it seems to me that they are predominantly concerned with the analysis of old clinical data e.g. obtained via hplc/ms/gc and stored as basic text. The employer expects you to find connections via scripted mining techniques and subsequently discover the new wonder drug that would make them millions.
Another common scenario is the 2-man bioinformatics dept. at a college or university that wants someone to re-code their entire operation from linux to whatever so they can collaborate in the [Only registered users see links. ] and squander their remaining grant money on 80's style platted leather belts and grow their 35-40 year old collection of brown leather-look shoes.
