| G and A are purines, they have 2 rings C and T are pyrimidines, single ringed G:C has 3 hydrogen bonds while A:T has 2 hydrogen bonds having 4 bases instead of two is important in transcribing genetic information, as each triplet of bases will code for a particular codon of mRNA. This mRNA codon is then translated by the ribosome to give a particular amino acid If there were less than 4 bases then the DNA wouldn't be able to store as much genetic info and having more would be unnecessary.
