Hello. Just wanted to know if some one can shed some light here. we are having a debait on are forum and i said sucking on a 2p to pass a alcohol test wont wont work. to which was replied. " Biochemistry isn't your strong point I take it. If you look at the science behind it the 2p trick it is actually fairly watertight. Alcohol is lighter than copper as a compound and the copper bonds with the alcohol and weighs it down allowing a greater quantity of carbon dioxide and oxygen into the breathalyser thus causing a green light. Like I said, it isn;t rocket science." I dont agree with drink driving. this is just a discussion. but is what he said correct?

Ahh, I'm just a pipette stuffer, but I think I can answer your question very thoroughly. If you've been drinking, sucking on a copper coin will not affect a breath test in any way. Alcohol doesn't magically get sucked and sequestered into a small copper coin that has no appreciable surface area. There might be some other kind of structure you could swallow that might have enough surface area and alcohol affinity to make you sober in record time, but trust me when I say that it's not been invented yet. On Earth, Alcohol evaporates everywhere constantly, and if you've been drinking, it's pouring out of your skin and your breath, and there's little chance of containing it! When you exhale, modern science can tell pretty exactly you how much you drank, and it can tell you how much alcohol is in your body per unit of blood also! Sucking on mints, cough drops, or divine herbs from Shiva are unlikely to do you much good. I am experienced on this subject, and I think I can give you good advice: If you've been drinking, don't drive! If you're drunk and theres no such thing as a taxi within your budget where you live, and walking is out of the question, get a hotel room! If you can't afford a hotel room, go sleep in some bushes! It might sound crazy, but honestly, it's your best best these days! By the way, I think booze is one of the greatest accomplishments of mankind! Still, dont you dare think that sucking on a copper coin will make you legal. I promise you it won't! Kind Regards, Craig

Thank you for the reply. None of us are even dreaming of drink driving. I just dont believe the sucking on a 2p myth. but he is sure it works. what about this bit. is there any truth here "Alcohol is lighter than copper as a compound and the copper bonds with the alcohol and weighs it down allowing a greater quantity of carbon dioxide and oxygen into the breathalyser thus causing a green light." Can any one disprove this? I would like to reply to him. but im not a biochemistry guy, Last edited by Johnson; 04-14-2009 at 04:36 PM.

sucking on a 2p copper coin will not affect the result of a breathalyser test in any way. 1) this myth was completely busted on the Mythbusters TV show in the US. 2) I researched the type of semiconductor detector used in breathalysers, and see that they are completely unaffected by copper. They are sensitive to some organic compounds besides alcohol though, which I thought was interesting: They will give false positive readings if enough of any of the following compounds is present: (in order of significance) Benzine Hexane LPG Carbon Monoxide A datasheet on a common alcohol sensor can be seen in the sensor section of the Futurelec website. (I'm too much of a greenhorn to be allowed to post URLs. Regards, Craig
