| Dear Ali Oxytocin plays an important role in eliciting milk ejection in dairy cows and buffalo. It is released from the posterior pituitary gland into the blood circulation by various stimuli associated with suckling or milking. Elevated concentration of oxytocin in blood causes contraction of myoepithelial cells surrounding the alveoli and smaller ducts of mammary gland leading to forceful ejection of milk from the acini and the cisternal cavities. Oxytocin release determine also an increase of mean somatic cell count (SCC) in milk that are represented by epithelial cell and leucocytes. By means of SCC measured is possible to evaluate oxytocin action on lactation process. If you wish information on methods employed for SCC determination, let me know. |
