Major Duties: At the full performance level, the incumbent participates with the scientist in all phases of the research process and assumes full technical and operational responsibility for specific phases of the molecular biology and genetics research. Performs routine and recurring techniques and studies in isolation and characterization of DNA and RNA, molecular mapping, cloning and characterization of plant genes. Operates and maintains a variety of specialized equipment such as high performance liquid chromatograph, genetic analyzer for sequencing, real-time PCR machine and other equipment used for test and evaluation procedures. Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records. Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources. Keeps detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages. Maintains inventory of chemicals. Prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory or greenhouse and safely disposes of waste material. Working Conditions and Other Considerations: Assignment includes moderate risks such as working with potentially hazardous chemicals. Qualifications Required: Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below. Basic Requirements GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least six semester hours must be directly related. GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level OR six months of directly related graduate level education. GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level OR one full year of directly related graduate level education. GS-08: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level OR one and a half years of directly related graduate level education. GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level OR two full years of directly related graduate level education or a master's degree. If qualifying all or in part based on your education, please submit a copy of your college transcripts OR a list of college courses with credit hours, dates completed, and grades received.
