When sells die via necrosis, as opposed to apoptosis, they balloon out and burst, releasing all cellular components into the extracellular environment. With apoptosis, caspases (caspase-3, 9 and others) are activated and cell is able to shut down in an orderly fashion, when it literally shrinks by "chewing" itself up with caspases and proteinases (visually, you'll be able to see membrane blebbing, but not "inflating" i.e. balooning)
