PI stained the DNA so it detect both healthy and dead cell but by follow cytometry you can detect both staining and the size so you can find our the DNA fragments which ocurred as aresult of both apoptosis and necrosis( types of cell death).

As far as I know PI stain the DNA and in flow it means that if you observe PI+ this means that you have cells in the lstage of late apoptosis or necrosis.
