Gene Ontology , or GO , is a collaborative effort to address the need for consistent descriptions of gene products in different databases, their placement in cellular components, and their molecular functions in a species-independent manner. Gene ontologi, eller gå, er en kollaborativ indsats for at imødekomme behovet for sammenhængende beskrivelser af gen-produkter i forskellige databaser, deres placering i cellulære komponenter, og deres molekylære funktioner i en art-uafhængig måde. Terms in each of the vocabularies are related to one another within a vocabulary in a polyhierarchical (or directed acyclic graph) manner. Vilkår i hvert af de ordlister er relateret til hinanden inden for et ordforråd på en polyhierarchical (eller rettet acykliske graf) måde.

New terms and annotations are suggested by members of the research community. Ny salgs-og annotationer er foreslået af medlemmer af forskerverdenen. Once submitted, they are reviewed by members of the GO consortium to determine their applicability. Indgivne de er gennemgået af medlemmer af GO-konsortiet til at bestemme deres anvendelighed.
